Preparing Your Car for Storage

How neat is your garage? We all know the struggle of trying to arrange off-season storage bins and other hardware in the garage… along with bikes, skateboards, and the car. With all of the clutter, your garage can end up an “organized mess”, with nothing in a proper place. Of course, having an off-season or extra vehicle you no longer drive but can’t part with sacrifices much-needed space. That’s where Shepard’s Inc. comes in handy.

Before you bring your off-season vehicle to our Danbury facility, we recommend the following steps to assure your car is ready for pick up:

Change Your Oil, Filters, Brake Fluid, and Coolant

Your engine’s oil actually contains contaminants that can damage the engine if they are not changed frequently enough. The same applies to your coolant and brake fluid: chemicals in them can cause parts to corrode or oxidize. We highly recommend changing your car’s fluids beforehand to save you time at the time of pick-up.

Fill Your Gas Tank

This step is the most self-explanatory. Nothing is worse than arriving to the Danbury Facility excited to drive away in your car… and not having the fuel to leave. Be sure to fill your tank for a quicker pick-up next season.

Additionally, gasoline absorbs moisture in the car’s gas tank that would typically cause rust, and prevents the tank’s seals from drying out. We highly recommend, for cars in storage for several months or longer, using a fuel stabilizer. They are effective for about one year, but you are always welcome to our facility to add more if you need more time.

Disconnect Your Battery

Did you know your car drains battery even when the engine is off? Cars typically will require 15 minutes of driving every two weeks to maintain the battery and keep the car components lubricated. However, when your car is in storage, you likely will be unable to provide this. That’s why we recommend disconnecting the negative battery cable from your car’s battery, to assure you won’t have to replace the battery when you pick up the car from our Danbury facility.

Remove or Cover Your Windshield Wipers

Have you ever left a rubber glove on a surface for too long? You might notice the rubber will begin to stick to the surface: and the same is true for your windshield wipers. The rubber, as it sits stationary over time, can stick to your windshield and leave a hard-to-remove residue. Naturally, you can prevent this by wrapping your wipers in plastic when storing your car in our Danbury facility: or, you can remove them entirely and store them separately. We recommend removal, but the choice is yours.

Release Your Parking Brake

It may seem counterintuitive, but leaving your parking brake pads on for too long can cause fusion with the rotors. When you park your car in our Danbury facility, we recommend sticking chocks under the wheels instead to prevent any movement: this is a safer, and better way than engaging the parking brake.

Cover Your Car to Prevent Dust

Our Danbury facility is clean, secure, and temperature controlled: but, naturally, any item sitting stationary for a long while can collect dust over time. To prevent dust from entering your car, we recommend covering it and any openings, such as the tailpipe.

Mind Your Tires

When your car sits in the same position for a long period of time, your tires will naturally develop flat spots and require replacement when you pick it up. Thankfully, our temperature-controlled storage facility in Danbury will very seldom allow this to happen: colder temperatures are known to flatten tires quicker. However, if your storage plan is long-term and your car sits for an exceptionally long time, you may still experience flat spots in your tires.

That’s why Shepherd’s Moving recommends getting your tires rotated and over-inflated before a storage period. For a long-term solution, we recommend raising your car on jack stands and removing the tires if possible.

Picking Up Your Car

At Shepherd’s Moving, we know how excited you are to pick up your car. When it’s finally summer, you’re likely elated to finally drive away in your fresh, clean convertible. However, driving your car out of storage without checking it thoroughly can be extremely dangerous. We want to make sure your car is in tip-top shape, just as the day you left it in our Danbury facility. Before you hit the road, feel free to ask one of our specialists to help you check the following:

  • Cleanliness. Be sure to wipe off any dirt or dust on important components.
  • Fluids. Make sure your fluids are at an adequate level, and are in good condition. Refill anything that has lowered over time.
  • Tire Pressure. Be sure to check your tire pressure, and (if you did not remove the tires or jack up your car), mind any flat spots before getting in the vehicle.
  • Rubber Parts. Tires and Windshield wipers should be checked. If your wipers were not removed before storage, be sure to mind if they have stuck to the windshield.
  • Battery. If you disconnected the negative battery cord before storage, reattach it and test it by starting your car.
  • Engine.  Allow your car to run for a few moments, to assure the engine is running smoothly.
  • Brakes. Feel free to drive around our Danbury facility and brake slowly.
  • Remember: after storing your car for a long period of time, you want to drive it slowly and easily. Be attentive of any signs of wear or damage.
